Ampitheatre in Pompeii Our next stop was Naples from where we caught a taxi to Pompeii. This is a picture of the ampitheatre at Pompeii which both Pat and I thought was every bit as impressive as the Colosseum in Rome. This ampitheatre was constructed in 80 B.C. and is the oldest known ampitheatre. It could seat 20,000 people. Unlike the later ampitheatres, there are no underground service areas. The arena had to be entered from ground level entrances on the outside walls.
