Cromwell's Bridge and Stonyhurst College

Here are a few photos taken on a Sunday outing in February 2016. The first one is of "Cromwell's Bridge" over the River Hodder at Mitton. I always thought that this had been built by Oliver Cromwell in order to get his troops across the River Hodder in readiness for the Battle of Preston in 1648. However, it turns out that it was actually built earlier than that - by Sir Richard Shireburne in 1561. Cromwell used the bridge to get his canons over the river ... and in doing so he removed the stone railings. It has been known as Cromwell's Bridge ever since.

The following two photos are of Stonyhurst College. The school has had a number of famous pupils including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes.
