Here are some photos of our cycling holiday based in Sledmere, Yorkshire in September 2016:
This is Rudston Monolith. It is the tallest megalith (standing stone) in the United Kingdom and stands 25 feet high. It is in the churchyard in the village of Rudston
The top of the stone appears to have been broken off. Originally the stone would have been around 28 feet tall. In 1773 it was capped with lead. Although the cap was removed for some time, it has now been replaced.
David Hockney visited Sledmere in 1997 and painted The Road to York Through Sledmere which shows the road on the way from York to Bridlington on the East Yorkshire coast.
This photo tries to reproduce the angle at which the painting was done, although that's not quite possible because David Hockney clearly used some "artistic licence" in his composition and had a higher viewpoint.
This is the lighthouse at Spurn Point. It is at the end of Spurn Head Spit which is a narrow sand spit at the tip of the East Riding of Yorkshire.
The lighthouse lies around 3 miles from the end of the public highway. It is possible to cycle to it but we didn't have our bikes with us and I didn't fancy the 6 miles round-trip walk so just took this photo from the shoreline near to the car park!
Back in my time at University, I had a regular jogging course that took me from where I was living to Skidby Windmill and back.
The Hull area is unsual for having had its own telephone network. Its telephone boxes are therefore cream rather than the usual red colour. Here's one near to Skidby Windmill.
